Back filing Taxes in Canada: Your Fast Track Guide to Catching Up (Without the Stress)
Haven’t Filed Your Taxes in a While? It’s Okay. Let’s Fix It Together.
You’re not alone—and more importantly, you’re not doomed. Back filing taxes sounds intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. This is absolutely something you can handle—yes, you.
Stress-Free Process
You're Not the Only One
People fall behind on taxes for all kinds of reasons. Life throws curveballs—illness, job changes, family stuff, mental health, burnout, forgetfulness… it happens.
CRA Isn't Out to Destroy You
They’re much more reasonable than people think—especially if you make the first move. They want people to file and pay what they owe. That’s it.
You Can Catch Up
This is absolutely something you can handle. And you’ll probably feel a huge weight lift once you do.
Take a Breath
Know this: You can catch up. You can fix it. And if you get the right support, it’s often way easier than you thought it would be.
What Is Back filing
(And Why Should You Care)?
Back filing just means submitting tax returns for years you didn’t file. That’s it.
You might be owed money
The CRA only gives refunds for the last 10 years. If you don’t file, you’re leaving money on the table.
Your benefits are probably paused
No GST/HST credit, no Canada Child Benefit—until you catch up.
Penalties and interest stack up
The longer you wait, the messier (and costlier) it can get.
Banks care
Need a mortgage or business loan? You’ll likely need those returns up to date.
What are the Penalties:
If and only if you owe money, there is a 5% penalty only on the portion of the tax that you owe (e.g. You owe $1,000 then penalty would be $50)
Interest charges – if there are balances owing, they will charge interest and this generally is between 7%-9% – so on the above example, the interest on the $1,000 would be around $70-90 for the year
That’s it!
Waived? Try the Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP)
The CRA offers forgiveness if you come forward before they reach out to you with a full disclosure.
You could avoid facing:
The full 5% penalty
Most interest charges
Potential legal consequences
Here’s What CRA Actually Wants
The CRA’s job is to collect taxes, yes—but they’re not trying to ruin you. They want people to file and pay what they owe. That’s it.
Come Forward First
If you come forward first—before they chase you—they’re often surprisingly flexible.
Help Is Available
And if you need help? There are programs for that. More on that in a sec.
Okay, So How Do I Backfile My Taxes?
Let’s make this simple:
Gather What You've Got
Old T4s, slips, receipts—whatever you can find. Can’t find it all? That’s okay.
Log in to CRA's "My Account"
You can often download your missing info right from there. Super handy.
Decide How You'll File
For straightforward stuff: tax software like TurboTax or UFile works great. For messy years or multiple returns: call in a tax pro (it’ll save you time and stress).
File + Pay (or Set Up a Plan)
You don’t need to pay everything at once. CRA can set up a monthly plan that works for you. Seriously.
But What If I Can't Afford to Pay?
You’re not the first person in this boat. The CRA allows payment plans—and if you’re in a rough financial spot, you can even apply for taxpayer relief, which can reduce interest and penalties. Point is: don’t panic. There are options. This isn’t an all-or-nothing situation.
So... How Far Back Can I File?
Technically? As far back as you want. But if you’re hoping for a refund, the CRA only pays out for the past 10 years. Still, filing older returns is smart—it closes the loop, cleans your record, and helps avoid future stress.
Let's Get Real: The Worst Part Is Usually the Worry
Most people we’ve worked with say the same thing after they backfile: They sleep better. They stop ducking CRA mail. They stop worrying about that mortgage app or business loan. They feel in control again. You don’t have to live in fear of something you can fix.
